Kier Group plc, the main contractors responsible for managing the construction of Yr Egin has appointed a student from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) to work with company on the ambitious project.
Meleri Haf Owen, a Welsh-medium Religious Education student at UWTSD, had been on placement with Kier over the summer but has since been taken on as an Administrator for the duration of the Project to work with the construction company whilst also completing her studies.
“From day one Meleri has showed enthusiasm, commitment and attitude to work that is highly commendable. When the placement came to an end, it was then great to then be able to offer her employment working with us on Yr Egin.
“Meleri works hard and is always polite and courteous, completing all her tasks to a professional standard. We are pleased that she’s now able to continue to work with us for the duration of the project whilst also completing her studies at UWTSD.”
Yr Egin – UWTSD’s new digital and media centre in Carmarthen – is a transformational development that will be home to S4C’s main headquarters as well as a number of companies and organisations working with the creative and digital industries.
Yr Egin will also be a centre that will be at the heart of the community providing opportunities for local people to enjoy the building and its resources – a cafe, auditorium and performance areas. Construction started in March with the centre on track to be completed by summer 2018.
“It’s great to work on such an exciting project as Yr Egin,” says twenty-year old Meleri from Foelgastell, Carmarthenshire.
“I’d been working for Cyfle Building Skills on Coleg Sir Gâr’s Ammanford campus over the summer and it was through Cyfle that I heard about this opportunity. I tried for the job with Kier to gain experience of working within an office environment and it’s something that I’m thoroughly enjoying.
“I also wanted to gain more experience within administration,” adds Meleri. “During my time working with Kier I have developed and gained many new administrative skills as well as learning more about the Construction industry and having the opportunity to meet many new people.
“I’m really enjoying my job with Kier and am really pleased to have been given such a great opportunity whilst also being able to complete my degree at UWTSD.”
Kier is offering work experience placements throughout the duration of the Yr Egin project as well as many community engagement opportunities. For more information, please contact Amanda Swoboda, Kier’s Community Engagement Co-ordinator by emailing Amanda.Swoboda@kier.co.uk
